NQCYC provides off-beach sailing at the Port Denison Sailing Club on Thomas Street on Bowen's Front Beach. The wide sandy beach is ideal for dinghy sailing and the club house provides an excellent spot for spectators. The sailing club was established 150 years ago, making it the second oldest sailing club in Queensland.
Today the Port Denison Sailing Club is governed by the NQCYC with both clubs working together to provide sailing tuition and encourage more junior and youth sailors to get active out on the water.
The club has been successful in gaining several government grants over the past few years, which has allowed a revival of off-beach sailing.
At present, there are 35 junior and youth sailors regularly participating in tuition and racing.
The International Optimist Dinghy is the predominate class with the club owning 6 boats and another 6 privately owned. The club also has RS Fevas and Pacers.
Head coach, Faraday Martin and coach Eli Whitton, provide Learn to Sail tuition each Saturday. There are 4 fleets of varying levels each participating in a 3 hour session over two Saturdays. The club also has North Queensland coach, Danny Fuller, traveling to Bowen to provide training sessions for the Bowen Junior Sailing Team.
Junior and youth sailors are strongly encouraged to travel and compete in training camps and regattas to build on their boat handling and racing skills. The club is looking forward to seeing more and more young sailors representing Bowen in regattas all over the state and country.
