BOWEN WELL REPRESENTED AT QUEENSLAND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CAMP AND CHAMPIONSHIPS – KEPPEL BAY SAILING CLUB, YEPPOON
A total of 13 junior sailors travelled to Yeppoon in September to participate in the Queensland Youth Development Camp and Championships at Keppel Bay Sailing Club. Bowen’s North Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (NQCYC) was able to subsidise some of the cost for families due to the ‘Get Going’ government grant which is available to sporting clubs to encourage more people to get active through sport.
The week began with a 3 day training camp with some of Queensland’s top coaches. 10 Bowen juniors took part in the Green Fleet Training Camp and 1 in the Open Optimist Training Camp. All participants improved their boat handling and racing skills over the 3 days. The green fleet participants were able to gain confidence on the water and learn the rules of racing.
The Development Camp was a perfect lead up to the 3 day regatta that followed. The regatta was open to all classes of dinghies. Again, Bowen was well represented with 10 juniors competing with many finishing their first regatta.
Mack Mitchell and Aidan Gummow competed in the Open Optimist class and were both pleased with their efforts in a fleet of 14. Aidan finished 1st and Mack finished 9th.
Keppel Bay Sailing Club ran a Green Fleet using Optimists and Tackers for those new to racing. There were 15 entrants, 8 being from Bowen and the remainder from Yeppoon. The Green Fleet was run in the sheltered Causeway Lake in South Yeppoon. The lake provided an ideal setting for the beginning sailors to gain confidence in getting around a race course. They completed 11 races over the 3 day regatta and all learnt a lot from the experience. Bowen received two podium places in the Green Fleet – Seth Beak finished a very close 2nd and Isabella Bruce finished 3rd. The young sailors were all proud of their efforts for their first competitive regatta.
Bowen Junior Sailing begins its Term 4 program this Saturday, October 3 at the Port Denison Sailing Club. If you would like more information about getting involved with off-beach sailing please contact the NQCYC or Kylie Gummow on 0427862346.
